Soo troopers arrest meth suspect

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A Sault Ste. Marie man faces felony drug charges, following a traffic stop in Chippewa County.

Saturday around 4 p.m., troopers from the Soo Post stopped a vehicle with defective equipment on Johnston Street near Easterday Avenue.

Investigation led to the arrest of Derek Gehrke, 41, for possession of meth, operating a vehicle with no insurance, and for a separate warrant for his arrest.

Gehrke was lodged in the Chippewa County Jail on a $5,000 bond. His next court date is June 30.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
