Former L'Anse schools employee arraigned on embezzlement charge

BARAGA, MI— A woman formerly employed as the business manager at L’Anse Area Schools has been charged with embezzlement.

Theresa Bianco, 55, of L’Anse, was arraigned Tuesday on a charge of larceny and theft under false pretenses-$100,000 or more. It is alleged Bianco misappropriated more than $100,000 over a period of six years.

An investigation began in April, after school officials reported financial discrepancies to the sheriff’s office. Investigators examined school financial records, interviewed witnesses, and traced unauthorized transactions.

Bianco was released on a $25,000 bond. A probable cause conference is scheduled for July 22 and a preliminary exam for August 12.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
