Man arrested for throwing Molotov cocktail at Republican headquarters in Iron Mountain

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI— An Iron Mountain man faces charges for throwing a Molotov cocktail at the window of the Dickinson County Republican Committee headquarters.

The Iron Mountain Police Department says it received a report around 3:55 p.m. Saturday that someone saw a suspicious person near 617 North Stephenson Avenue. The witness saw a subject try to light a rag sticking out of a glass bottle, then throw the unlit bottle at the building.

Officers reviewed footage from surveillance cameras in the area. They saw the suspect throw the bottle at the window, which caused the bottle to shatter. Another broken glass bottle containing an unknown liquid and rag was found in the parking lot.

Police identified and arrested Zayn Arcand, 19, of Iron Mountain. He said he made the bottles in his driveway and threw them at the building to send a message against corruption.

Arcand is charged with arson and the manufacture and possession of an explosive. He remains lodged in the Dickinson County Jail on a $15,000 bond.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
