CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI— The driver of a semi tractor-trailer was arrested in Chippewa County Tuesday for reckless and drugged driving.
The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a semi running vehicles off the road on Mackinac Trail. A deputy found the semi at the intersection of M-28 and tried to stop it, but the vehicle continued eastbound for several miles.
The semi was seen running off the road. Oncoming traffic had to pull off the road to avoid a head-on crash. The vehicle also ran several stop signs without slowing.
The undersheriff eventually passed the semi and blocked the intersection at 9 Mile and Riverside Drive to warn oncoming traffic and in hopes the semi would stop. The semi driver slammed on the brakes and stopped before he hit the patrol vehicle.
The driver was arrested for operating under the influence of drugs, fleeing and eluding, and reckless driving.
Assisting in the incident were the MSP Motor Carrier Division, the Sault Tribe Police Department, U.S. Border Patrol, and Central Dispatch.
