UPSET, MSP nab suspected meth trafficker in Ontonagon County

WATERSMEET, MI— A suspected Ontonagon County drug trafficker has been arrested in Gogebic County.

Recently, the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team developed information about a man suspected of bringing large amounts of crystal meth from Florida to the local area.

Detectives, working with the Michigan State Police Traffic Safety Team, stopped the suspect’s vehicle near Watersmeet. The driver, Justin Diem, 50, of Ontonagon County, was arrested after he became combative during the investigative portion of the stop.

A K-9 unit from the Negaunee Post alerted to the vehicle. Officers found 11 ounces of meth, evidence of drug distribution, a .45 caliber handgun, and more than $600 in cash.

Diem was lodged on the Gogebic County Jail on charges relating to resisting and obstructing police, felony firearms possession, and possession with the intent to distribute crystal meth.

Detectives from UPSET were assisted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office, MSP Wakefield Post, Lac Vieux Desert Tribal Police, and Al’s Auto of Bruce Crossing.
