Gwinn Man Convicted of 1st-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, 1st-Degree Child Abuse

LANSING – A former Gwinn resident has been convicted of sexual assault charges relating to incidents in late 2010 and early 2011 in downstate Oceana County.

According to a release from Attorney General Dana Nessel, 43-year old Jeffrey Scott Barrett was convicted on June 5th in Oceana County on four counts of First-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and one count of First-Degree Child Abuse.  Barrett repeatedly sexually assaulted the victim at his Oceana County residence between the fall of 2010 and December 2011 when she was 4 and 5 years of age. He also abused the child in other ways, knowingly or intentionally causing severe mental harm.

Barrett was originally charged by the Oceana County Prosecutor’s Office in 2018, when the victim reported the abuse, but he evaded authorities until his arrest by the U.S. Marshals Service in Marinette, Wisconsin, in January 2025.

Barrett is scheduled to be sentenced on July 20 in the 51st Circuit Court in Oceana County.
