CALUMET, MI— Michigan State Police are warning the public about a scam targeting people who have received new cell phones or other electronic devices.
A citizen recently contacted the Calumet Post after they were called by a scammer who claimed to be from Spectrum. The scammer had legitimate details about the order and falsely claimed the wrong phone had been sent. They offered to provide a Fed Ex shipping label so the phone could be returned, saying it was urgent. The scammer also offered a 100-dollar gift card for the customer’s trouble if they sent the phone back.
Troopers say the label ships the new device to the scammer, who could then use it for identity theft. This scam may not be limited to a specific provider.
Officials say if there is a question about an order or whether a device needs to be returned, contact the provider directly using the customer service number listed on an official bill, the provider’s verified website, the provider’s official mobile app, or in person at an authorized retailer.
