SUGAR ISLAND, MI— A man was arrested in Chippewa County for damaging police property and resisting arrest.
It happened Monday around 1:30 p.m. A Michigan State Police trooper from the Sault Ste. Marie Post was responding to a 911 call from Sugar Island when he received a driving complaint involving a vehicle that was also on the island. The trooper couldn’t respond to the complaint due to the initial emergency call.
When the trooper boarded the Sugar Island ferry to go back to the mainland, the vehicle involved in the complaint boarded the ferry behind him. During the journey, a man got out of the vehicle and began hitting the trooper’s car with a hammer. As the trooper took the suspect into custody, he resisted and assaulted the officer.
The suspect was lodged in the Chippewa County Jail for operating under the influence of drugs, resisting and obstructing a police officer, assaulting a police officer, and malicious destruction of property-police vehicle.
Assisting in the incident were the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, Sault Tribe Police Department, Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, and U.S. Border Patrol.
