ST. IGNACE, MI— One person was arrested in connection with a serious two-vehicle crash on the Mackinac Bridge around 2:55 Wednesday morning.
Troopers from the St. Ignace Post say multiple vehicles went through the toll booths on southbound I-75, accelerated, and began driving recklessly. One driver rear-ended another vehicle near an active construction area on the bridge where traffic is restricted to a single lane.
Two people were seriously injured and two others received non-life-threatening injuries. Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.
The at-fault driver is a 28-year-old Jamaican man who was a seasonal worker in the area. He was arrested and lodged in the Mackinac County Jail for reckless driving causing serious impairment of a body function.
Additional charges may be requested for the suspect pending the results of the investigation. Police are also investigating other individuals who may have been driving recklessly on the bridge.
