Suspect nabbed for breaking into DeTour Area Schools and damaging property

DeTOUR, MI— A Chippewa County man has been arrested for breaking into DeTour Area Schools.

Thursday around 6:30 a.m., Michigan State Police from the Sault Ste. Marie Post responded to a report that someone had broken into and was still inside the school. Staff had reported early to prepare for the day when they saw the subject inside and called 911.

Troopers located the suspect and arrested him. No weapons were found, but the 24-year-old man from DeTour Village had damaged property and left some areas in disarray.

School officials initially delayed the start of classes, but after assessing the damage and scope of necessary cleanup, decided to cancel school for the day. Classes will resume as normal on Friday.

The suspect was lodged in the Chippewa County Jail for breaking and entering and malicious destruction of property. The investigation is ongoing.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
