Officials at Baraga Correctional Facility stop drug smuggling ring

Drugs discovered in package at Baraga Correctional Facility

BARAGA, MI— The Michigan Department of Corrections has foiled a drug smuggling operation at the Baraga Correctional Facility.

On January 18 a woman went to the facility, claiming she was visiting an inmate. When she was told no visit was scheduled, she used the lobby restroom and left.

Officers thought she behaved suspiciously, so they searched the bathroom. They found a hidden package containing drugs, including K2, high-potency THC wax, and suboxone strips. They removed the contraband and replaced it with a decoy package. When a prisoner porter began his work shift the next morning, he collected and tried to conceal the package, and was immediately apprehended.

MDOC Intelligence Operations began investigating and also referred the case to the Michigan State Police. Over the course of several months, officials identified several subjects allegedly connected to the smuggling plot, including the porter, additional prisoners, and multiple associates.

The case remains under investigation.
