Brownfield development grant headed to former Kincheloe base

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI--   Chippewa County has received a Brownfield grant for the former Kincheloe Air Force Base.

The $45,000 redevelopment grant was awarded by the Department of Environmental Quality. It will help the Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation find new uses for vacant buildings on what’s now the Chippewa County Airport. Officials will evaluate underused buildings and determine environmental cleanup and asbestos abatement needs.

The Kincheloe Air Force Base was created in the early 1940s and closed in the late 1970s. The Chippewa County EDC has owned the property since then.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
