Milk production ending in 2 Upper Peninsula counties

CHASSELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — The closure of two dairy farms in the Upper Peninsula will end commercial milk production in two counties.
     The Daily Mining Gazette reports that the Johnson Dairy Farm in Baraga County stopped production last week, and the Rolling Acres farm in Houghton County expects to sell all its milking cows by the end of July.
      Gary Palosaari is the owner of Rolling Acres, which he took over from his parents in 1992. He says the farm kept losing money because of years of low milk prices, and that he has been subsidizing the business with money he's earned doing construction work on the side.
     The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the nation lost 6.5% of its dairy farms in 2018.
