Tourism dollars rise in the Keweenaw

HOUGHTON AND KEWEENAW COUNTIES, MI— A new report indicates visitor spending is increasing and having a positive influence on the economy in the Keweenaw.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation released its visitor spending impact report for 2024. It says visitor spending in the Keweenaw region—the combined total for Houghton and Keweenaw Counties—reached $130 million in 2024, up from $126.5 million in 2023.

Houghton County saw its visitor spending grow to $104.5 million in 2024, representing a 2.6-percent increase from the prior year. Keweenaw County's visitor spending also showed an increase, reaching $25.5 million in 2024, a 3.7-percent increase from 2023.

Officials with Visit Keweenaw say the tourism economy not only drives direct spending but results in local job creation, a reduced tax burden on locals, and an enhanced quality of life.
