AmeriCorps funding slated for U.P. groups

MARQUETTE, MI--   Two Upper Peninsula organizations that assist disadvantaged students are getting money from the AmeriCorps program. 

 

The Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Service Agency will receive $149,857 for 12 AmeriCorps volunteers to tutor K-10 students in Marquette and Alger counties.

 

And The BHK Child Development Board in Houghton is getting $586,500 for 46 volunteers to provide academic support to students throughout the U.P.

 

The grants are funded through the Michigan Community Service Commission. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
