MTU grad students join walkout

HOUGHTON, MI--   Graduate Student Government at Michigan Technological University is joining a nationwide walkout Wednesday.

It aims to support higher education and show how vital grad students are to society.

GSG President Hossein Tavakoli says the proposed federal tax plan includes a huge tax hike on graduate students. He says grad students across the country are afraid their tax bills will double or triple, which would discourage current and future students from continuing their education at the graduate level.

Students are gathering at the husky statue at 4 p.m. The event will include speeches and Tech President Glenn Mroz will give a few remarks. The group will then walk across campus to Alumni House and loop back to the statue.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
