MARQUETTE, MI-- The Michigan Energy Office has announced a program to make more schools in the state ENERGY STAR certified.
The MEO is making funds available to Michigan public educational facilities on a first-come, first-served basis.
ENERGY STAR certified buildings meet strict energy performance standards. They use less energy, are less expensive to operate, and emit fewer greenhouse gases than their peers.
Only six public schools in the Upper Peninsula are ENERGY STAR certified: two are in Negaunee, two in Houghton, one in Sault Ste. Marie, and one in Baraga.
To be eligible for ENERGY STAR certification, a building must earn an ENERGY STAR score of 75 or higher, indicating that it performs better than at least 75 percent of similar buildings nationwide.
