Statue building in fever pitch following polar vortex

HOUGHTON, MI (AP)--   The construction of snow statues for Michigan Tech's annual Winter Carnival has resumed after being put on hold last week due to the extreme cold.

The polar vortex brought bitterly cold temperatures, canceling classes last week. Officials said it was unsafe to work on the snow statues in those kinds of conditions. Temperatures eased over the weekend.

Students typically pull an all-nighter starting Wednesday night to finish the statues before Thursday's judging. Awards will be handed out Saturday.
