Gwinn Schools millage on Tuesday ballot

GWINN, MI--   The Gwinn Area Community Schools district has a millage request on Tuesday’s consolidated election ballot.

Superintendent Sandy Petrovich says the district is asking for 1.75 mills over 10 years. That’s $1.75 on each thousand dollars of taxable value of a resident’s home.

Petrovich says the revenue will create a sinking fund to replace flooring, classroom plumbing and light fixtures, upgrade high school science rooms, update technology, and get a 911-compliant phone system required by the state.

“We have many non-negotiable items—that means these are items that we absolutely need—for the continuation of the safety and security and education of the students in our schools,” she says.

Petrovich says the district is working its way out of a deficit budget and state funding won’t cover the repairs, replacements or upgrades.

Polls open Tuesday at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
