HOUGHTON, MI (AP)-- The sun is rising on a solar energy project proposed for an Upper Peninsula school.
Organizers say they've lined up the estimated $42,000 needed to install solar panels on a roof at Houghton High School. The supporters include River Valley Bank and the Michigan Energy Office.
Houghton-Portage Superintendent Doreen Kramer tells The Daily Mining Gazette that the panels could be installed before the new school year. She wants to develop classes around the solar project.
Some advocates say the district could save $115,000 in energy costs over the next 25 years. Drew Cramer of Solar Up LLC in Hancock says parents deserve credit for "a lot of legwork" on the project.
