Rec facilities, eateries close at NMU due to COVID-19

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University is closing several campus-connected sites to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

All recreational sports activities at the PEIF and Wildcat Fit Zone have been suspended for two weeks, starting Thursday. The closures do not affect classes held at the PEIF.

The facilities will tentatively reopen November 16. Officials will evaluate the situation at that time.

The university is also closing Fieras, Smoothie King and Temaki and Tea. That’s due to staffing limitations following a number of close contact quarantines related to positive COVID-19 cases among employees.

Both facilities have been cleaned and look to reopen November 9.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
