NEWBERRY, MI— The following is a press release from Tahquamenon Area Schools Superintendent Stacy Price:
"Today, Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at approximately 1:30 p.m. we became aware of a message on a bathroom stall that indicated a threat to students and staff.
"Law enforcement was called immediately. The district went into 'Shelter in Place.' During Shelter in Place, students and staff stay in classrooms with doors locked. Leaving classrooms is only permitted with administrative escort. Normal teaching activities still occur.
"The district worked with law enforcement to plan for an orderly and safe dismissal. Law enforcement was stationed outside and inside the school. Dismissal procedures were altered to be smaller groups to assist with supervision. The building was cleared and locked.
"Tahquamenon Area Schools will be cancelling school on Thursday, December 9 and Friday, December 10, 2021. This is to ensure safety of ALL and time to gather information for the investigation. School will resume on Monday, December 13, 2021.
"The district extends a sincere thanks to everyone for their patience during dismissal today as safety was the #1 priority. Thank you for working with all staff during this challenging situation.
"The district especially extends a sincere thank you to ALL TAS staff as they stepped into roles that educators typically do not have to face. They kept students in classrooms moving forward in the day. When plans needed to change, they worked together and communicated well to get things done."
