MARQUETTE, MI— Northern Michigan University’s Board of Trustees has a new head.

At a Friday meeting, the Board named Steve Young of Lansing as the new chair. Alexis Hart of Royal Oak will serve as vice chair.

Young says the Board’s biggest responsibility right now is finding a new university president.

Also at the meeting, the board approved a recommendation from a campus work group to rename the Luther West Science building and stop using NMU’s alma mater song, “Hail, Northern,” written by West. The move came after West’s association with the national eugenics movement in the early 1900s came to light.

The board also approved giving university staff members a one-time payment equal to 2.5 percent of their salaries. Faculty received the same through their recently ratified contract.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
