MARQUETTE, MI— Several schools in Marquette and Alger counties are applying for a waiver to start classes before Labor Day in the upcoming school year.
Current law prohibits public schools from scheduling instruction on or before Labor Day, but the state superintendent can grant a waiver.
Schools asking for a waiver include Burt Township, Gwinn, Ishpeming, Marquette, Munising, Negaunee, NICE, North Star Academy, Republic-Michigamme, Superior Central and Marquette-Alger RESA.
MARESA is holding a required public hearing on the application to the Michigan Department of Education on Friday. It starts at 10 a.m. at the MARESA building at 321 East Ohio Street in Marquette.
