UW asks M&M Area Community Foundation to talk about education savings accounts for kids

MARINETTE, WI— The M&M Area Community Foundation has been recognized for its efforts to establish children’s savings accounts for post-secondary education and training.

The University of Wisconsin Extension has invited Foundation Executive Director Paula Gruszynski to speak at forums about creating and expanding universal savings accounts. Educational and community leaders from Wisconsin, Michigan and other areas of the country will attend.

Over the past four years the Foundation has established $50 deposit-only accounts for kindergarten students across Marinette and Menominee Counties. Money is added each year to the account until graduation.

Research shows children with a dedicated savings account of $500 or less are three times more likely to graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary education or training.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
