NMU recognized for military friendliness, organizational leadership degree

MARQUETTE, MI— Northern Michigan University has received national recognition on two fronts.

It ranks fourth among small public schools as a 2023-24 Military Friendly School. It’s Northern’s sixth consecutive appearance in the top 10, and the school is the only Michigan university to achieve the upper tier in that category.

NMU exceeded the Military Friendly benchmark standards in six different categories. It rated 80 percent above the benchmark for military student support and retention, nearly 78 percent above for financial aid and assistance, and nearly 75 percent above for culture and commitment.

And NMU's online applied workplace leadership program is one of the best organizational leadership bachelor's degrees in the nation. That’s according to a 2023 listing compiled by OrganizationalLeadershipEdu.org. The editors praised the fact that 96 percent of recent grads are employed or continuing their education.

The program, offered through NMU Global Campus, is designed for non-traditional students who have previously earned college credit or an associate degree and want to advance their education on a flexible schedule.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
