James Haveman to deliver keynote address at NMU graduation

MARQUETTE, MI— Former Northern Michigan University Trustee James K. Haveman will address graduates at NMU’s spring commencement next week.

Haveman served two separate terms as director of the Michigan Department of Community Health. He also held executive director roles for the Department of Mental Health, Bethany Christian Services, the Kent County Community Mental Health Program, and “Project Rehab,” a substance abuse program in Grand Rapids.

Haveman advocated for the board’s investment in creating a new NMU Center for Rural Health and later led a comprehensive review of the university’s mental health services.

He will deliver the keynote address and receive an honorary doctorate in public health at NMU’s commencement, which takes place Saturday, May 6th at 10:30 a.m. in the Superior Dome.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
