L'ANSE, MI— A L’Anse native has established a $1 million charitable trust that will fund scholarships for L’Anse graduates.

Dr. Franklin St. John says he grew up poor and worked hard to overcome his difficult start. St. John went to Michigan Tech and worked as a metallurgist, then founded a company that manufactures botanical extracts, herbal formulas, and tea.

In 1999, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree from MTU.

St. John says he hopes to help others from the L’Anse area have the same opportunities.

The scholarships will be funded upon his and his wife’s deaths.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
