Possible MSHS nicknames narrowed down to 8

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education has come up with a list of preferred nicknames for Marquette Senior High School.

As part of the MSHS rebranding process, the board discussed 34 potential nicknames provided by the MSHS Advisory classes.

Approved for consideration are: Cardinals, Hawks, Marauders, Reds, Redtail Hawks, Red Hawks, Red Jackets, and Sentinels.

The board will continue discussing the names at its January 16th meeting and plans to make a final decision at its meeting on January 22nd.

Officials say the ideal nickname would pay tribute to the unique aspects of the school district and community, and it cannot reference any protected class.

Community input is welcomed. Feedback can be emailed to schoolboard@mapsnet.org.
