MAPS Board makes final decision on MSHS nickname

FM Studio A

MARQUETTE, MI— Marquette Senior High School has a new nickname: the Sentinels.

The Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education voted 6-1 for the name during a special meeting at Kaufman Auditorium Monday night. Jason Zdunek was the only “no” vote.

The decision follows months of discussion and public feedback regarding a new name. The school board also relied on student advisory groups at the high school to give their input on what the nickname should be.

Residents are encouraged to supply ideas on what the Sentinels mascot should look like by emailing schoolboard@mapsnet.org.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
