Proposal would increase NMU faculty wages

MARQUETTE, MI— NMU administration and faculty have agreed on a tentative Memorandum of Understanding for the next two years of a five-year contract.

About 300 full-time faculty and 100 contingent faculty are represented by the AAUP/AFT union. If the proposal passes, faculty will see a 6.25-percent wage increase in the next fiscal year beginning July 1st. They’ll receive a 2.75-percent increase in the second year beginning July 1st, 2025.

The proposed rates replace the current 2.5-percent yearly increase originally negotiated for the period.

In November 2021, Northern entered into an agreement with the AAUP/AFT faculty that allowed for a reopener on wages for the fiscal year 2024-25.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
