ESCANABA, MI— A member of the Bay College Board of Trustees has been honored for 50 years of service.

At a conference of state community and tribal colleges this summer on Mackinac Island, Thomas Butch of Delta County was given the 2024 Michigan Community College Association Special Recognition Award. It’s presented in recognition and appreciation of exemplary contributions and commitment to supporting the mission of Michigan’s community colleges.

Butch was appointed in 1974 and elected to the office for eight subsequent terms. He will retire on December 30, 2024.

In 2019 the Board of Trustees renamed the Bay College library the Thomas L. Butch Library in his honor.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
