Northern Michigan University holds 125th Homecoming

MARQUETTE, MI— Northern Michigan University’s 125th Anniversary Homecoming will be held Sept. 20-21. Homecoming features several events for alumni and community members. All activities can be found on nmu.edu/homecoming.

The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center is hosting an ongoing exhibition tied to the anniversary theme titled “"Northern Tapestry: 125 Years of Stories” in its Gries Hall gallery. The DeVos Art Museum exhibitions will also be available for viewing. The remaining daily schedule follows:

Friday, Sept. 20

Alumni are invited to check in at Wildcat Welcome outside the bookstore in the Northern Center for light refreshments, homecoming information, yearbooks and more. There will also be a campus-wide academic department open house. A nursing alumni events is scheduled from 2-4 p.m. in the Science Building, with an alumni panel presentation and tours. WNMU Public Media will host an open house in the Harden Hall Learning Resource Center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with tours, refreshments and snacks.

The NMU Women’s Soccer teams is playing at the NMU outdoor fields located behind the Superior Dome. The game begins at 3 p.m. against Grand Valley State University.

NMU’s annual Homecoming Parade will begin from the athletic complex parking lot at 5:30 p.m. at the Pine/Fair intersection, travel down Third Street and turn left on Hewitt before returning via Front Street.

Country duo Maddie & Tae will perform a free outdoor concert behind the Superior Dome. Gates open at 6 p.m. NMU student Sami Brown will open at 6:30, with the headliners taking the stage at 7:30 p.m. This concert is sponsored by Lenovo.

Saturday, Sept. 21

A Golden Wildcat Brunch for the classes of 1974 and prior in the Northern Center Ballroom at 9:30 a.m. President Tessman will be celebrating alumni on their 50th anniversary of their graduation from NMU. Please RSVP with Alumni Relations (906) 227-2610 to attend this event.

Dan Truckey, director of the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center, will host a historical tour of NMU from 11 a.m. to noon, beginning at the Carillon Towers outside on the north end of the Northern Center.

There will be a tailgate party behind the dome (Lot 55 and adjacent grassy area) before the NMU Homecoming football game from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. From the tailgate head into the Dome to watch NMU kick off at 1 p.m. against Alma College.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
