SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— Officials are working to mitigate damage at Sault Area Middle School, after part of the roof collapsed over the weekend.
In a Facebook post, Superintendent Amy Scott-Kronemeyer said a portion of the roof gave way around 12:20 a.m. Saturday into a classroom adjacent to the gym.
That section of roof supported a heating unit connected to the boiler system, causing a water line to break. It flooded more than 20,000 square feet, including the gymnasium floor.
School officials say because of the swift action of local businesses, they’re
confident that damage to other areas of the school will be mitigated and minimized.
Only one classroom, which is not used for daily instruction, is out of commission.
Officials say they are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety and integrity of the building before welcoming students and staff back.
