HOUGHTON, MI— Michigan Technological University has achieved R1 status, placing it in the state’s University Research Corridor.
To achieve R1, a university must spend at least $50 million annually on research and development. It must also award at least 70 doctoral degrees each year across research fields.
Joining Michigan State University, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University, Tech's inclusion marks the first addition to the URC since its formation in 2006.
“Michigan Tech is honored to join the URC and work alongside Michigan’s leading research institutions,” said MTU President Richard J. Koubek. “Together, we will continue driving innovation, supporting industry, and ensuring our state remains a global leader in research and talent development.”
Tech spent $106.9 million on research in FY24 and saw 300 percent growth in research funding since 2004. Officials say the university’s expertise in engineering, advanced manufacturing, mobility, and sustainability complements the URC’s research strengths.
