NMU president in the running for top job at Montana State University

BOZEMAN, MT— Northern Michigan University President Brock Tessman is one of two finalists interviewing for the president’s post at Montana State University.

The Bozeman school’s website says Tessman will interview Thursday and Friday.

The Michigan Native was hired as Northern’s 17th president in February of 2022. Before that, he had served as deputy commissioner of higher education for the Montana University System since 2018.

The other candidate is Kurt Schnier, current Vice Chancellor for Planning and Budget and Chief Financial Officer at the University of California, Merced. He interviews Tuesday and Wednesday.

Current Montana State University President Waded Cruzado will retire in June. Officials there are hoping to hire a new president this spring.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
