NMU to start construction process for new student apartments on Monday

MARQUETTE, MI— Northern Michigan University will take the initial steps toward construction of two new student apartment complexes next week.

The buildings will be located on either side of Presque Isle Avenue near Cohodas Hall.

The contractor will begin fencing off the construction area and moving equipment onsite Monday. Preparation for the removal of the former Invent@NMU building on the corner of Fair and Presque Isle avenues and the former Temaki building next door will also begin next week.

The NMU Board of Trustees previously approved the project because existing NMU housing was operating at full capacity. The two new buildings will be capable of accommodating 386 residents through a mix of studio/1-bedroom, 2-bedroom and 4-bedroom apartments. Construction is scheduled to be completed before the fall 2027 semester.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
