NMU faculty group protests university's denial of funding for Queers & Allies student events

Nicole Walton

MARQUETTE, MI— A committee with NMU’s faculty union is throwing its support behind the university’s Queers & Allies organization, after the student group was denied funding for certain events this year.

At the beginning of the semester, Queers & Allies members were notified they wouldn’t receive assistance for events like Lavender Graduation or the annual Drag Show.

The Office of Opportunity, Empowerment, and People—once known as the Office of Diversity and Inclusion—said it and the Office of Housing and Residence Life were operating under new federal mandates. NMU would no longer use university funds to support groups or events identified by the White House and federal departments as DEI-associated.

The AAUP union’s Committee on Outreach and Organization released a resolution stating such denial of support—among other things—excludes Queers & Allies from support other student groups receive, is discriminatory under state law, exacerbates the social marginalization of vulnerable student populations, and establishes a dangerous precedent.

The full resolution is below.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
