GACS tries for a fifth time to get a bond proposal passed

GWINN, MI— Gwinn Area Community Schools has another bond proposal on the November ballot.

It’s the fifth time the district has asked for money to replace things like the leaking roof and student lab necessities.

Superintendent Dr. Sara Croney says this ask is for $24.9 million, which translates to 1.89 mills over 30 years. Last year’s proposal was for $48 million. Croney says the decrease in the requested amount came from listening to the public.

“In fact, our tagline is ‘Your feedback is our focus: Prioritized to protect, preserve, and prepare.’ So, those were the three things that we focused on and other things just had to go by the wayside.”

If the millage passes, 4th grade will be added to the middle and high school building, and the district board will eventually decide which of the current two elementary schools will stay open. Croney says that will “right-size” the district and save $250,000 a year.

She says the proposal also adds two secure entrances to keep students safe.
