MARQUETTE, MI— Northern Michigan University would build a new Arts District, under the school’s new five-year facilities master plan.

The proposed initiative would feature a $51.5 million upgrade to the arts facilities and establish a Center for Creative Arts and Entrepreneurship.

Key components include a 17,900-square-foot renovation of Forest Roberts Theatre, including a lobby expansion and upgrade of audio, visual, and lighting infrastructure. A 30,000-square-foot addition would be built onto the Blackbox Theatre, containing a dance studio lab. The plan also includes a new, high-tech media creation lab with a live recording room, sound-editing booths, and post-production workspaces.

The five-year master plan paves the way for the university to seek state capital outlay funding for a large portion of the project.
