GCC receives funding for maritime training

IRONWOOD, MI— Gogebic Community College is getting nearly half a million dollars to expand training capacity for maritime and shipbuilding occupations.

The Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Opportunity and the Michigan Department of Transportation are advancing initiatives that support the Michigan Maritime Strategy. The ten-year plan was designed to unlock economic growth and create good-paying jobs across the state’s multi-billion-dollar maritime industry.

GCC—which was awarded $476,496—is one of five community colleges to receive funding.

Officials at the Ironwood school say the goal is not just to create one training location, but to develop a model that can be expanded to better serve employers and communities across the western Upper Peninsula.
