Ballot wording approved for road issue

LANSING, MI (AP)--   The Board of State Canvassers has set the wording of a road funding ballot proposal asking voters if they want to increase the state sales tax and raise $1.3 billion a year more for transportation infrastructure.

The elections board approved the language Thursday.

Voters decide in the May 5 special election whether to approve an amendment to the Michigan Constitution.

The 100-word summary begins by saying the 6 percent sales tax would rise to 7 percent and be eliminated on gasoline and diesel fuel. It also says the amendment would revise permissible uses of the school aid fund and trigger laws that include increasing the gas tax and dedicating revenue for roads.
