Lorinser files, Delta County public defender to run for prosecutor

MARQUETTE, MI— Dr. Bob Lorinser has filed to appear on the ballot as a Democratic candidate for Michigan’s 1st Congressional District.

His campaign says it initially gathered the number of signatures needed to file. But they circulated new petitions after incumbent Republican Congressman Jack Bergman’s campaign indicated it would challenge the word “Doctor” on Lorinser’s petitions. Bergman spokesman James Hogge says legally, Lorinser cannot put a title in a section reserved for a name.

Lorinser will face Bergman in the November General Election.

In Delta County, Diane Kay-Hougaboom has announced her candidacy for chief prosecutor. She currently serves as a contract public defender for the county.

Her decision comes after Prosecutor Brett Gardner announced his retirement last week. He appointed his chief assistant, Lauren Wickman, as acting prosecutor.

Whoever wins the November election will fill the remaining two years of Gardner’s term.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
