NEGAUNEE, MI— The Negaunee Electric Department has broken ground on a new, south-side substation.
The locally owned, not-for-profit utility will add two transformers, which will supply four circuits and be the first owned by the municipality.
Officials say the new, $6 million “Irontown” substation will reduce costs and liability issues while allowing for city expansion. The existing substation is nearly at capacity.
The new substation was approved earlier this year and is expected to be complete near the end of 2024. It will provide direct access to the main transmission lines supplying power to the area.
Electric Department Supervisor Mark Wainio says the new substation will let Negaunee have more control over its own power.
