Brig to sail into Marquette in honor of dock's birthday

The U.S. Brig Niagara

MARQUETTE, MI--   Cliffs Natural Resources is celebrating the 100th birthday of the ore dock at Presque Isle by bringing in a tall ship.

Friday around 4 p.m. the U.S. Brig Niagara from Erie, Pennsylvania will sail into the lower harbor following a cannon salute at the ore dock.  It will be carrying about 60 passengers who will board in Munising.  Sailing will be 22 participants from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marquette and Alger Counties and several employees from LS&I Railroad and Cliffs Michigan Operations.

Public tours of the Niagara will be available Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Proceeds will benefit the Marquette Maritime Museum.

Approximately 10 million tons of iron ore pellets are moved across the Upper Harbor dock each shipping season.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
