Escanaba hits 150

ESCANABA, MI (AP)--   Escanaba is celebrating its past while it plans — and plants — for the future.

The city on Friday kicks off the Esky 150 Celebration to mark its sesquicentennial. The weeklong festival includes concerts, logrolling demonstrations, historical tours and displays, and other activities.

The city also has launched the Esky 150 Trees and NeighborWoods Planting Parties projects. Each enables the city, its public schools and other organizations to plant trees, shrubs and daffodils to honor the city's 150th birthday celebration.

Escanaba was organized as a town in 1863, incorporated as a village in 1866 and a city in 1883.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
