State holding Wednesday tornado drill

LANSING, MI— As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, Michigan is holding a statewide tornado drill Wednesday.

During the 1 p.m. drill, residents may observe or hear alerts on TV and radio stations, as well as outdoor sirens in their community.

Captain Kevin Sweeney is deputy director of the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division. He says last August, seven tornadoes touched down in one day, killing two people. He urges residents to take steps now to prepare and create a plan to protect their families, homes, and pets.

The average lead time for tornadoes to develop is 10 to 15 minutes, which means everyone needs to be ready to react quickly when a warning is issued.
