Calumet celebrating 150 years

CALUMET, MI— The Village of Calumet is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, and several activities are planned.

Formerly known as Red Jacket, Calumet was incorporated on March 19, 1875. An open house was held at the Village Hall Wednesday to kick off events designed to honor Calumet’s history and heritage.

August 9-10, Cro Fest will celebrate the region’s Slavic heritage with a weekend of music, dance, and Croatian food at Greenspace Park.

Pasty Fest & Keweenaw Kernewek will be held August 15-16 in honor of the region’s Cornish culture. The village will hold a rededication ceremony for the sign marking its status as a sister city to Camborne, Cornwall.

The Grand 150th Celebration will take place September 12-13. It will feature a 6th Street block party.

Closing out the year’s events will be the Red Jacket Ball on December 13. The formal gala encourages 1900s-era attire.
