Calumet's 'Big Annie' statue fundraiser reaches its goal

CALUMET, MI— The Village of Calumet is celebrating more than “Big Annie Day” Wednesday; it’s cheering the success of the Big Annie Statue Fund.

Native daughter Anna Klobuchar Clemenc, affectionately known as “Big Annie,” was a labor activist and leader during the 1913 Copper Strike. Known as an American Joan of Arc, her advocacy for workers' rights made her one of the most notable figures in both Keweenaw and American labor history.

A community-driven effort to create a permanent statue honoring Big Annie has completed its fundraising campaign, and officials are inviting the community to an unveiling and dedication of the statue on August 22 at 3 p.m. in downtown Calumet. The event will begin with a parade down 5th Street, followed by the dedication ceremony at Calumet Greenspace Park.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
