"Big Annie" statue celebration to be held 8/22 in Calumet

Big Annie

CALUMET, MI— Calumet’s “Big Annie” statue is set to be unveiled on August 22.

Anna Klobuchar Clemenc was a labor activist and leader during the 1913 Copper Strike. Her courage, determination, and advocacy for workers' rights made her one of the most notable figures of an important chapter in both Keweenaw and American labor history.

A community celebration will begin at 3 p.m. with a parade down 5th Street, following by a dedication ceremony at Calumet Greenspace Park. It will mark the unveiling of a statue commemorating Big Annie’s life and legacy.

The Big Annie Statue Fund reached its fundraising goal earlier this year. Calumet officials thank the community-wide effort that made the statue possible.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
